UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Ex-Armani model Scott, 31, stars as DS Phil Hunter in The Bill. He lives with his partner Estelle, and their son Zak, three. Here, he talks about his love of newts and Tina Turner.

What would you do if you could be invisible for the day?

I'd walk around work and find out all the gossip, but anything else i'd get up to, you wouldn't be able to print!

You're forced at gunpoint to get a tattoo. Which design do you choose?

I've already got an Aztec medicine man on my arm, which I had done when I was 15. I hid it from my mum and when she finally found out, she gave me a bit of a slap!

What's in your fridge?

Lots of really good vegetarian stuff. I've been a veggie for 15 years. There's so much healthy and tasty food about that doesn't involve hurting animals.

Tell us about your first pet.

I stole a newt from a pond and called him Louie. I then got him a friend called Max, who I didn't realise was female. We ended up with lots of baby newts, but they didn't survive for long as I forgot to oxygenate the water!

What skill do you wish you possessed?

I listen to a lot of jazz and funk music and would love to be able to play the piano or the trumpet. It's the only think I wish I could do and I'm starting a percussion course soon.

What's your best physical feature?

I don't like to talk about my best feature, but at work I'm known as monkey boy because of my ears!

Continued further down.....

When did you last yell at someone?

My neighbours were playing dance music late at night recently. It was coming up through the floorboards so I jumped up and down on the floor and then i leant out the window and screamed at them to shut up. They now think they've got a Neanderthal living above them!

What urge do you never act on?

To jump off tall buldings when filming stunt scenes.

What chocolate bar would you be?

A Curly Wurly - because they're chewy in the middle and quite a mouthful!

Who was your first celebrity crush?

There were two in quick succession. First it was Kelly LeBrock in Wierd Science but then I got a bit attached to Tina Turner in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

FITTING THE BILL (9/6/04)

From manchesteronline.co.uk:

DS Phil HunterON screen, Scott Maslen is brooding hard man Phil Hunter in The Bill  - the decidedly dodgy copper with very dapper dress sense. Off screen, the 32-year-old's life seems just as exciting.

Last year, the former model won the Best Dressed Man award and he's good friends with Hollywood star Orlando Bloom. But the actor insists he doesn't have a glamorous lifestyle.

"I'm a family man," says Scott, talking warmly about his girlfriend, Estelle, and their three-year-old son, Zak.

"That's all I do when I'm not working. I'm not really showbizzy at all. I've been to a couple of premieres of films recently, but I don't go out and do the circuit.

"We will get married eventually, definitely, I'm sure. It's just we are married as far as we're concerned.

"We've been living together for so long and we have a kid together."

In his two years playing Hunter, Scott has become an integral part of the action at Sun Hill.

For the past few months, he's been filming the build-up to Hunter's final confrontation with his nemesis - boxing promoter and small-time gangster Dennis Weaver, played by Jonathan Lindsay.

For a long time, the two men were useful to each other, swapping information that helped each of them further their own interests.

Then, six months ago, Hunter's wife, Cindy, discovered her husband had an affair with Weaver's wife.

Devastated, she told Weaver, and Hunter's best contact became his worst enemy. To make things worse, Weaver then found out the daughter he thought was his was actually Hunter's.

"Weaver would have killed Hunter straight away, but he's got too many ties with him," explains Scott.

MASLEN: Dapper "He had to keep him alive until all the business stuff was taken care of. But even though he's trying to deal with it on a business level, he then loses the plot.

Crazy

"That's when it starts getting real fun to play, because he's a crazy guy. John, who plays him, is massive as well. When you've got someone like that wanting to rip you limb from limb it's a bit scary."

Tonight's episode sees the last showdown between the two men, with Hunter being shot in the leg.

Despite her intense dislike of Hunter,
Det Sgt Samantha Nixon (Lisa Maxwell) helps him escape before a chase in disused underground tunnels.

"It's great, because the two people from Sun Hill who hate each other the most have to help each other in this grave situation," says Scott.

"Phil is losing blood and there's this intensity between him and Sam. They end up in these little sub tunnels and get lost."

Scott says the prosthetics department "went to town" on his gunshot wound, going for maximum gore.

DS Phil Hunter And while hard man Hunter deals with his bleeding leg with admirable bravery, Scott was less heroic when faced with the sight of blood.

"It made me feel a bit queasy," he admits. "It was funny, because when they were putting it on I was on a trolley and I fell asleep. It was like I passed out.

"When I woke up I looked down and had one of those moments where I was like, 'Aargh'. But then I remembered it was fake."

Whether Hunter survives to dodge and deal another day is a foregone conclusion - Scott has just signed for another year on The Bill, ensuring a positive outcome for his character.

But just how he escapes Weaver's clutches is shrouded in mystery.

"They do like to put Hunter through the mill," laughs Scott.

"I try to encourage them to do that as well, because it's fun. And this is Hunter's most action-packed storyline yet."

Bad Boy from 'The Bill'

Is 'Best-Dressed'

Actor Scott Maslen receives the 2003

Marks & Spencer 'Best-Dressed Man' trophy

A true cockney, who grew up within earshot of the 'Bow Bells' in South East London, received the Marks & Spencer 'Best-Dressed Man award at London's Ritz Hotel on October 7th. Scott Maslen, 30, a former Royal Marine and one time model, plays police 'bad boy' DS Phil Hunter in the TV series 'The Bill', and is the 'star' of the best-selling computer game 'Grand Theft Auto'.

Scott was one of a host of male celebrities nominated for the 'Best-Dressed Man' award by members of the public visiting the www.best-dressedman.com web site. He was voted into the top five on the celebrity best-dressed list and Marks & Spencer menswear judges subsequently selected him as this year's winner.

"While the old adage that clothes make the man is undoubtedly as relevant today as it ever was, this award is concerned with the whole man, his attitude and grooming, and not simply his clothes," says Maurice Helfgott, Business Unit Director of Menswear for Marks & Spencer. "Scott obviously has a comprehensive wardrobe of both formal and casual clothes and takes the trouble to wear the right clothes for the right occasion. But he is also a man of style in grooming and confidence and projects a very positive attitude."

Scott, who received the Marks & Spencer 'Best-Dressed Man' award together with a selection of clothes from the latest M&S collections, including Blue Harbour, Sp and Autograph, was philosophical about winning the award. "My on-screen character, DS Hunter, has helped to win as it's his style that people have seen me wearing on screen and probably voted for. Off screen I tend to dress more casually but if it's a special event then I always make an effort."

'Best-Dressed Man' awards organiser Tony Edwards said that the British male was now among the best-dressed in Europe and could match the former style leadership of the Italians. "Inspired by a growing number of male celebrities who have helped to show the way, British men are now taking a greater interest in the way they look, from clothes and accessories, through to general grooming. Actors like Scott Maslen must be congratulated for their part in the revival of style in the UK."
